World Rhythm Festival Workshop & Performance Schedule
This year the World Rhythm Festival (WRF) will be held on April 25-27, 2008. In preparing the 2008 workshop and performance schedule, the Seattle World Percussion Society's (SWPS) objective is to continue to achieve a diverse mix of rhythm cultures and styles while featuring both past and new artists.
APPLICATION SUBMITTALS
If you are interested in appearing at the World Rhythm Festival, please submit workshop and/or performance proposals via SWPS website at swps.org/swps.
From the SWPS home page move your cursor over the Rhythm Festival heading and a drop down menu will appear. Select Artist Application. Follow the directions to register on the website (contact information, artist bio; etc) and submit proposals. Please indicate the skill level for workshops (beginning, intermediate, advanced; etc).
Artists who have applied in the past will only need to login from any page on the SWPS website. If you've forgotten your password it can be emailed to you.
We encourage new applicants to submit a demo piece. (It is not necessary to send us your full media kit.) Your demo can be sent to SWPS, 12729 Lake City Way NE, Seattle WA 98125. We will contact you if we need more information.
Is There Compensation To Artists?
SWPS mission is to provide the Rhythm Festival free to all participants. Funding to produce this annual festival has always been small compared to the overwhelming results. With 50+ workshops and 20+ performances the festival has become a Northwest Mecca for drummers and dancers and an awakening for new initiates.
The WRF schedules artists using two guiding principles: "local artists first" and "we have limited resources". We produce the largest free percussion event in America. For this reason, we generally are not able to pay artists for workshops or performances or to provide accommodations or travel expenses. We can NOT pay for a large touring company.
We are happy to consider applications from those who have their own sponsorship, or who will be in town for the weekend and would like to contribute. (Please note that in the comments box on your application.) SWPS is dedicated to providing small honorariums in
appreciation of all our artists when post festival expenses allow.
Take this as an opportunity to promote what you do both locally and abroad. Additionally we staff a merchandise sales booth to feature your CD's and DVD's for sale.
This Festival offers a unique opportunity to be a part of the most vibrant rhythmaculture in America. Many participants request to come back year after year, at their own expense. From A Celebration of Youth Day and the Opening Ceremony to the Closing Celebration,
you'll have a unique opportunity to share your percussive spirit and traditions in a cross-cultural environment full of knowledgeable participants. Artists that rep for industry companies will find an enthusiastic and affluent audience.
SWPS operates through grants and donations of time and money from its supporters. From its early days SWPS and the WRF has been a grassroots phenomena, blessed by the dedication and talent of our rhythm community. Offering your services as a workshop leader and/or performer is an important and valued way to contribute to the continued success of the WRF. In addition to the satisfaction of being an essential part of the foundation of the WRF, you will benefit from the professional exposure it provides. As the world's largest rhythm festival in the nation, several thousand rhythm and dance enthusiasts now regularly attend this event.
On behalf of the SWPS board and all the volunteers who contribute their energy to this amazing event, thank you for your interest in supporting the 2008 World Rhythm Festival.
Sincerely,
David Chaus
