Sacred Drum Circle Anyone?

--- I posted this on the Seattle yahoo group and am getting flooded with responses. So, I thought I'd spread the love. ---

Anyone up for starting a sacred drum circle? All we need is to find a space and then bring
our drums, rattles, bells, flute, didg....

I have 2 visions: which one do you like better? or both?

Vision #1:
- Everybody show up with all sorts of stuff to make music and food to share.
- We have a simple opening circle, burn sage to the directions, maybe have an intention
for where we are sending our energy and then dive in.
- Closing would be a simple quiet space to feel all the juicy energy and maybe put names
in the circle that we want to benefit from the healing.

No 'experts', no pressure, just simple listening and finding your own beat.

Vision #2: just like vision one but with an opportunity to explore Shamanic relationships
with your: Totem Animal Spirit and/or Teacher in the upper and lower worlds:

- Everybody show up with all sorts of stuff to make music and food to share.
- We have a simple opening circle, burn sage to the directions, maybe have an intention
for where we are sending our energy and then dive in.
- I (or someone else trained in shamanism) set a simple OPTIONAL intention designed to
help people journey as they drum or dance for the evening to establish communication
with the spirits and get information or healing on a particular, personal issue.
- Perhaps when the "jam" finds it ending, we talk about the journeys people had. Perhaps
we just keep drumming.
- Closing would be a simple quiet space to feel all the juicy energy and maybe put names
in the circle that we want to benefit from the healing.

No 'experts', no pressure, just simple listening and finding your own beat.

Greetings!

I'm moving to Portland and would love to be involved with the local drum community down there. Are there any weekly drum jams that happen regularly?

Please let me know (send me a private message).

Thanks!

World Rhythm Festival Celebration of Youth Day

Hello everyone, here’s another reminder the World Rhythm Festival is scheduled for April 25-27, 2008 and the deadline for proposals is November 30th 2007.

We are also sending a call out to all Drum and Dance teachers to participate in our Celebration of Youth Day. Teachers of the youth classes are free to present any material that fits into our broad program goals. Facilitators may also have the option of leading two
sessions back to back (~50 minutes each allowing time for movement between workshops). We are letting the adults who bring the children know that they will need to attend the classes with the children. So they will not be leaving the children in your care!

The focus of Celebration of Youth Day is to support and encourage our youth 5 years old and up to express themselves through music and dance and showcase their talents. As schools will be in session during that week we are inviting schools to arrange field trips to
come and join us. We are also inviting the community at large to participate and support Celebration of Youth Day.

The day will look like this: 10:00 12:00 workshops
12:15-2:00 Youth

Performances
2:15- 4:00 workshops

If you are interested in teaching for Celebration of Youth Day please indicate on your proposal. You can submit proposals at the SWPS website. For more information contact me at 206-353-5561.

Look forward to hearing from you.

From David Chaus, WRF Director:

Hey folks, we have the dates confirmed for the World Rhythm Festival, April 25-27, 2008. It promises to be another great event this year. Mark it on your calendars!

I'm enclosing the text of our invitation for artists to propose workshops and performances; if you are planning to attend the WRF and interested in leading workshops, please submit a proposal. I apologize for any duplications of email that may have sent to through other email lists.

Thanks,

World Rhythm Festival Workshop & Performance Schedule

This year the World Rhythm Festival (WRF) will be held on April 25-27, 2008. In preparing the 2008 workshop and performance schedule, the Seattle World Percussion Society's (SWPS) objective is to continue to achieve a diverse mix of rhythm cultures and styles while featuring both past and new artists.

APPLICATION SUBMITTALS

If you are interested in appearing at the World Rhythm Festival, please submit workshop and/or performance proposals via SWPS website at http://swps.org/swps.

From the SWPS home page move your cursor over the Rhythm Festival heading and a drop down menu will appear. Select Artist Application. Follow the directions to register on the website (contact information, artist bio; etc) and submit proposals. Please indicate the skill level for workshops (beginning, intermediate, advanced; etc).

Artists who have applied in the past will only need to login from any page on the SWPS website. If you've forgotten your password it can be emailed to you.

We encourage new applicants to submit a demo piece. (It is not necessary to send us your full media kit.) Your demo can be sent to SWPS, 12729 Lake City Way NE, Seattle WA 98125. We will contact you if we need more information.

Is There Compensation To Artists?

SWPS mission is to provide the Rhythm Festival free to all participants. Funding to produce this annual festival has always been small compared to the overwhelming results. With 50+ workshops and 20+ performances the festival has become a Northwest Mecca for drummers and dancers and an awakening for new initiates.

The WRF schedules artists using two guiding principles: "local artists first" and "we have limited resources". We produce the largest free percussion event in America. For this reason, we generally are not able to pay artists for workshops or performances or to provide accommodations or travel expenses. We can NOT pay for a large touring company.

We are happy to consider applications from those who have their own sponsorship, or who will be in town for the weekend and would like to contribute. (Please note that in the comments box on your application.) SWPS is dedicated to providing small honorariums in
appreciation of all our artists when post festival expenses allow.

Take this as an opportunity to promote what you do both locally and abroad. Additionally we staff a merchandise sales booth to feature your CD's and DVD's for sale.

This Festival offers a unique opportunity to be a part of the most vibrant rhythmaculture in America. Many participants request to come back year after year, at their own expense. From A Celebration of Youth Day and the Opening Ceremony to the Closing Celebration,
you'll have a unique opportunity to share your percussive spirit and traditions in a cross-cultural environment full of knowledgeable participants. Artists that rep for industry companies will find an enthusiastic and affluent audience.

SWPS operates through grants and donations of time and money from its supporters. From its early days SWPS and the WRF has been a grassroots phenomena, blessed by the dedication and talent of our rhythm community. Offering your services as a workshop leader and/or performer is an important and valued way to contribute to the continued success of the WRF. In addition to the satisfaction of being an essential part of the foundation of the WRF, you will benefit from the professional exposure it provides. As the world's largest rhythm festival in the nation, several thousand rhythm and dance enthusiasts now regularly attend this event.

On behalf of the SWPS board and all the volunteers who contribute their energy to this amazing event, thank you for your interest in supporting the 2008 World Rhythm Festival.

Sincerely,

We`ll all be there this weekend. There are actually two groups that meet there around 2. A group of african drum students and some beautiful bellydancers. We play for a group of knights who beat the hell out of each other for your viewing listening or participating pleasure. It will be hit and miss until the summer traveling is done but this weekend is a definite go!

There are over 100 people on this Seattle Drum Circle tribe -- does anyone ever actually participate in a drum circle? Where? When?

It sounds like the Turtle Drum sacred drumming events Tasara has been hosting have been going well. And I know of some drum & dance classes that are going strong. I'm happy for all that.

But beyond these organized, indoor events, whatever happened to just getting together in the park on a sunny summer day & jamming out? That used to happen a lot all over Seattle, but if it's happening anywhere right now, I sure can't find it. From what I see, interest in outdoor drum circles seems to be at it's lowest ebb in all the 15 years or so that I've been drumming in Seattle.

I feel kinda sad about it. Anyone have any good news I don't know about?

Another Sunday in the park?

Hello Seattle drummers!

We've had a few pretty nice jams at Gasworks on Sundays. when weather has permitted. (Did somebody put a weather curse on Sundays this summer or what?!) This Sunday there will be a Peace Concert at Gasworks ( http://www.seapeace.org/ ), & the weather should be decent, so who's up for bringing our drums down to the park & adding to the mix? We'd want to play somewhere away from the main stage to get away from competing sound -- maybe down by the lake? Anyone game? I'm inviting some folks from the W. African drum & dance community, too. Let's do it up right & rock the park!

I suggest starting around 3pm. The concert will go until 6. People can go back & forth between concert & drum jam from 3-6, then after that, it's all drums! Who's in?

Greetings all,

The medieval Group I am a part of has a Drum practice in Greenlake on Sunday afternoons from 1-3. Our focus is on middle eastern rhythms. Anyone interested in dropping by to jam, share knowledge, or just have good time is welcome even if you aren't into medieval events. We set up right off the walking path at 64th and Greenlake Way, about six blocks south of the Starbucks.

drummers needed for Pride Parade June 24

A loose collection of dozen bellydancers will march in the 2007 Pride Parade in downtown Seattle. We need percussionists to set our hips in motion! Do you have a drum you can walk with? You'll need to commit to two rehearsals (Saturday or Sunday midday on Capitol Hill) in June and then the parade itself on the morning of Saturday, June 24 downtown. Must be familiar with the most common Middle Eastern rhythms. Potential prize winnings will be split evenly among all participants. This will be a good networking opportunity for future dancer/drummer collaborations. Please contact Amy at amykatehorn@gmail.com if you want to parade with us.

Hey everyone!

I created a chatroom for us all to talk and communicate and offer assistance and whatnot. I'm trying to expand the community and it'd be great if you guys could stop by and say hi! We need people to be there even when others aren't or else people are likely to dive out for lack of interaction. I'm on there as much as I can be and that's all I can ask of you folks too :)

Anyways, go ahead and stop by. Thanks a bunch!

It’s fun! It’s an achievement, It’s where dancers work together for a larger vision. I have been doing this for about 17-18 years now. Each year women see our beauty, joy and pride in the parade and are inspired to start belly dancing the next week. 2 years ago 15 year old Nicole saw us and got inspired to be in the parade the next year. She is 17 years old now and has been a featured dancer at Costa's and Taki’s Mad Greek and she teaches at her high school!
See Nicole in 2006 parade’s Billion belly March

Looking for drummer for gay men's Tribe party

Hey everybody,
I have a party called Tribe at the old Element space (now called Level 5) and I want to have a performance by a skilled drummer (traditional conga or similar drum). I'm looking for a decent looking guy between 21-40 that will give a passionate, skilled performance for 5-10 minutes during the event. Must be comfortable around gay men and in front of an audience - will play along to a tribally dance track (no microphone on drum). Send a picture and what type of drum you play and experience to info@onedegreeevents.com. I really want to infuse this party with the power of the drum and want a performer that can convey that. Will pay.

Thanks

Blessings drummers,
Looking for drum circles.
I am Rromani Sister by birth and culture, I have been playing with the peoples all my life.
I am intrested in sacred drum, inviting spirit prayer, dance, song, learning prayer songs world culture, sharing and celebration;
(not always gentle of soft).
I am not formally trained, but one day would love to learn.

I have played in many circles and am a good mimic when I need to; the ear and heart has been good to me.

I have been blessed to play next to some masters, (compleatly by accident); and I think I could have done well in the social success scene if i had chosen it,...(or choose it in future), hee hee.
Untill the girls are compleatly out of the nest; I let the moon, my famalia's teachings without words and spirit trust guide me.

I would love to know where the solid circles are, and because i have been away from seattle, clear directions and times would be highly appreciated.

I love world cultural beats, songs, prayer rythems, and my favoriate is when we all become one in harmony without any known music before hand.
An elder once called it, music from the void.
I am open to all harmonic experiences and am so not big shot, have so much to learn; but I embrace the joy of it.
I hope this finds you all well, it looks like many have not posted for a while....

Blessings to the good spirits and creators mystery divine, blessings to the sacred drum, my brothers and sister drummers, all relations in the great hoboro, (circle).

seeking drummers / drumming group

About 5-10 years ago, there was a drumming group called the Master Beaters. They performed for years in Seattle at Romp Naked, a men's dance tradition which began in August 1994 and continues.

The drumming was in 30 minutes sets, with DJ's covering during breaks -- the dance lasts only 4 hours. The return of live drumming to this event is the goal.

Does anyone remember the Master Beaters? Interested in creating a drum group to perform at the next Romp Naked (2006.02.11)? maybe just a few sets to test the water?

Peace & Light,

Experienced Drummers wanted for Sex-Positive events

Are you a drummer who can hold a groove and has some basic familiarity with a few culturally specific rhythms? We are looking for some drummers to perform for dancers at various sex-positive events. We currently have the makings of a small ensemble under the direction of a local pro player, and it promises to be a fun project. If you enjoy playing for dancers and are comfortable at sex-positive events, then drop me a line.

I'm not sure when this was published, but someone just sent it to me!

BIOLOGY OF PERCUSSION STUDY PREVIEWED
A neurologist in Meadville, Pennsylvania, has found a way to help beat illness: drum circles. Dr. Barry Bittman says new research suggests that beating a drum for one hour enhances the immune system and reduces stress. The study shows that drumming in a circle with other folks can cause positive changes at the cellular level that may fight off cancer and viral illnesses However, just banging by yourself doesn't seem to help. Bittman says the drumming must be done with others and everyone has to keep on the same rhythm. Dr. Bittman discussed his findings last week at the 9th Annual World Congress of Music Therapy in Washington, D.C. For more information on Dr. Bittman's study, please refer to the sites listed below. http:// www.mind-body.org http:// www.ecap-online.org

Edward is winding up his long standing run of Friday night drum jams this month. Looks like other folks will continue it but for the next few weeks it will be a love fest to celebrate all the energy Edward has put into this for the last few years. Last Friday was a terrific jam, and I expect more of the same in the coming weeks.

After a year or so break, its time for another drum jam party at the Seattle 'Sex Positive Community Center', aka 'The Wet Spot' on Sunday Dec 18. Its in the club calendar, but if you aren't a member and are interested in attending, drop me a line.

Its really a pretty low key event, nothing too edgy, but yes its perfectly ok to not wear office attire or any if you are in the mood. Its a relaxed and free-spirited place perfect for some drumming energy and general playful hanging out.

My partner and I received a drum lately, a tubano. We received another percussive instrument called piccolo bars.

I tell you this because... damnit, I wanna play with other people. I dunno whether he wants to yet (he's more shy, I'm more musical, but we do have jam sessions on our balcony here in West Seattle), but I'd like to meet other folks and just... play.

I'm a novice, but I have a good ear and my rhythm is good... and piccolo bars are really cool!

Anyway, lemme hear something... respond here or send me a pvt message. I'd love to get something together!

Peace,

Drummming for Seattle Sounders (soccer)

Hi Seattle drummers!

Anyone a soccer (world football) fan? We NEED drummers to join us at Qwest Field in 2005 for Seattle Sounders home matches.
The "Emerald City Supporters" are Seattle Sounders fans who stand at matches, sing and cheer...just like millions of other footy fans around the world do.
However, we are basically "rhythm challenged." :)
Any kind of drumming would be followed, appreciated and would add to the atmosphere at Qwest Field. Plus---on certain matches we might be able to get a group of dummers---in for FREE! (Tickets usually cost $12).

Let me know, and spread the word!

You can find out more about the Emerald City Supporters and other Sounders fans here...

http://SounderCentral.com

Cheers,

FireDrums Gathering April 15-17

FireDrums Gathering April 15-17
http://firedrums.tribe.net/
Friday, April 15 2005 - Sunday, April 17 2005
Red White & Blue Beach near Sana Cruz
A fire arts and hand drummers gathering.
This is not a 'festival' nor is it a BurningMan sponsored event.
This is just a casual fun weekend where we can meet new and reunite with old friends of the fire arts and drumming community.
For those who haven't yet experienced RW&B, it's a beautiful secluded beach with camping amenities near Santa Cruz that is fire friendly.
We hope to have a DJ 'part' of the time but RW&B is under new management & we're still feelin things out.
Although we'll certainly be dancing and playing with our friends, please be aware that this is NOT A RAVE or dance party.
This is an amazing place and it's extremely important for all of us that we have absolute respect for what is a very rare fire friendly place.
Please DO NOT FORWARD this to lists out side 'our' community.
Please DO forward this to our fire friends and drummers and we'll see you mid April for a very special weekend.
AND OF COURSE THIS IS A LEAVE NO TRACE GATHERING ! ! !
6 miles north of Santa Cruz on Hwy 1 at Scaroni Rd.
Red White & Blue Beach
5021 Coast Rd
Santa Cruz, CA 95060

Tobias Roberson returns

Tobias Roberson will be returning to the Seattle area in March. I don't know all the details yet, but I do know that he will be playing on March 13 at 3:00 PM at New York Restaurant, 1626 Railroad Street, Enumclaw. I don't have any more info, but I think Gari Haggerty will with him on oud (but, I don't know for sure). I'll post more information when received. The show he did there with Gari in January was great.

He's probably doing other shows and one or more workshops, but I don't know yet.

phone number: (206)763-9525
email address: ahmadrysb@yahoo.com

Teacher Info: Faisal Zedan derbakki@yahoo.com www.iqaat.com

Percussionist Faisal Zedan embodies the elements essential
to Arabic drumming: impeccable technique combined with an
inherent understanding of the complexities of Middle Eastern
musical structures. From the classical Mowashahat style to
simpler folkloric or fusion genres, his unique approach
mixes thousands of years of tradition with pure emotion and a
contemporary feel. Born in Oum D'Baib, Syria, in 1972,
Faisal Ghazi Zedan grew up obsessed with the derbakki (a
goblet-shaped hand drum, made of clay or metal, usually with a
natural skin head and sometimes referred to as a dumbek or
tabla). At the age of fifteen he learned what he could from
the only local drummer in the village. He then began to
teach himself to play by listening to and reproducing the
rhythms he heard on everything from classical Arabic recordings
to the lighter Arabic pop fare played on the radio, his
tireless practicing soon made him proficient on the instrument
and he began experimenting with playing both the riqq (a
skin-covered, tambourine like instrument) and the frame drum,
both of which hemastered quickly. After coming to
California in 1992, he met UCLA ¹s noted ethnomusicology professor Dr. Ali Jihad Racy, as well as renowned Arabic percussionist Souhail Kaspar, and was asked to join the acclaimed UCLA Near East Music Ensemble. While playing to wide and varied
audiences in concert with the Ensemble, in 1993 Zedan became
a founding member of Near East music group Kan Zaman.
Specializing in the Al Andelus style of Mowashahat, the North
African Arab-influenced music of Spain from the eighth to
fifteenth centuries, Kan Zaman has performed at Arabic
cultural centers, city-sponsored events and private shows up and
down the West Coast. Since 1996, Zedan has played and
studied at Northern California ¹s MidEast Music Camp, with artists
and musicians from all over the globe. In 1996 he also
taught at the camp. He has also performed with Julian Weiss of
the Al Kindi Ensemble of Syria and George Sawa, a music
professor and Qanun player residing in Canada. Faisal is a
founding member (with Donovan Lerman) of the Los Angeles-based Youm It Talaata percussion group, performing at festivals,
cultural events and with local Middle Eastern dancers in
Southern California.

Looking for a drummer

Hello,

My name is Quentin Johnson. I am Tenor section rep and Artistic Direction Committee member with the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Chorus. Our concert is in a couple of weeks. We are doing a show entitled _Far Away Places_ and we could really use a drummer for a piece or a couple of pieces.

We are a non-profit organization -- you can learn more about us here: http://www.slgc.org. If you are interested, please call our number (206) 860-SLGC and leave a message.

Our concerts are January 29th and Feb. 6 on the Hill at All Pilgrim's on Broadway. They'd give you more information.

Please, please, please, if you want to perform, get exposure, share your creativity and skills with a live chorus, please consider.

Thank you,

Quentin

New Year's Drumming?

OK.. I'm feeling like the crazy drunk & crowd scene isn't doing anything for me this year (or ever), but the urge to play a bit o' music is there and has come up from a few others I've spoken to. I suspect that there are even more like-minded folk out there as well.

Sooooo.. Anybody know of a place where the urge can be satisfied for this assemblage of (moderately) sober folk? Is there an event already happening somewhere, or is there still time to make one happen? To bad its so damn cold outside. We know they'll dance if we play for them, but where?

I was shopping for a doumbek and came home with a talking drum (it was a very good deal!). So, now that I have a drum, I feel qualified to join the Seattle Drum Circle Tribe. Ok, got the drum, now what do I do with it? ;-) I know about using the strings to "bend" the pitch. I'm sure there are no rules, but does anyone use hands as well as the curved stick to play it. I've only seen one played a couple times, and the player only used the stick.

Best regards to all!

My oldest son had an internship with the company that publishes the in-flight magazines for Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines. When the little articles he wrote appear in one of the magazines, the company sends him a few copies. When I got home last night, I saw that some December editions of the Horizon mag had arrived, so I thumbed through it. There was an article about drumming and Simone LaDrumma was featured prominently in it. The article also plugs the World Rhythm Festival to held in Seattle May 20-22.

Let's Plan Something

I've discovered that last minute posts about impromptu jams just don't seem to work. Occasionally I meet up with some folks at Gasworks when we all discover that we're loose and want to play, but there's rarely more than a 2-3 hour lead time. Thats not enough time to get the word out on any email lists or tribe.

Sooo.. What say we plan one for next weekend? Saturday works better for me, or late afternoon on Sunday. If the weather's good, Gasworks is great till 7+.

Anybody up for it? Alternate locations?

OK so now that I have everyones attention. Please take a good close look at picture #11. Notice the girl in the lower left hand corner of the pic. What is she doing? OMG! Is that something illegal happening at a drum circle in Seattle? No it can't be. Not here, not my town, not in my drum circle! LMAO Damn it and I missed meeting her too......

Is there anybody out there? (hear this echoing like Pink Floyd)

Need a Djembe?

If you are looking to purchase a djembe, the World Rhythm Fest is a good place to be able to check out a huge variety.

Do not buy anything until you stop by and play the Drums at Drumskull Drums from Santa Cruz in the pavilion. I am assuming they will be here again this year. They are without compare, and will give you a good idea of how a djembe should sound even if you go somewhere else to buy.

They finish the finest djembes -- sometimes $50 to $100 more than over vendors but the details make the difference.

I am not connected with these guys but am an extremely happy customer, I cannot recommend them strongly enough.

Look at and feel the inside of the drum. It should be smooth and not splintery.
The head should be level on the drum. The drum should be perfectly tuned when you buy it. It is is not well tuned when you get it, you may discover the drum won't tune right. Even if you can't play slaps well enough to tell, ask the shop keeper to play it so you can hear it.

The skin if shaved should be smooth and not scruffy.
The carving need not be elaborate but should be well done and finished with love.

The head should be nicely rounded and not oblong.
The diamonds in the cording should be very neatly done. Cheap cord stretches and your drum might not stay in tune long. Look carefully at the cord on the drums at Drumskull and make sure the drum you buy has cord of a similar quality.

You may pay $300-450 for a good djembe, not to say you can get a good one for a lot less in a stroke of luck.

Please get a regular full size djembe and not a 'baby' djembe or one of those huge oversized djembes. The huge ones don't usually sound any better, they are just a pain to carry and give the impression you are compensating for something.
The baby djembes rarely produce a reliable slap sound and are usually just ornamental.

If you want a small portable drum get a doumbec or frame drum or other drum designed to be small.

If you want a synthetic djembe like a Remo keep in mind that while great for playing in the rain and dragging around Burning Man, they are known for a 'ringy' sound. This can be partially corrected by taping the inside of the head, but will never go away completely as far as I can tell (I have one). Also a synthetic drum may never be a spiritual partner in music like a natural drum, if you believe in that stuff. I do.

If you buy a drum for goodness sake get a bag ($50-75) or at least a head protector. Protect your new family member. Over the shoulder straps for playing while standing are a good idea and inexpensive.

One more thing, the only drums I have seen that compare to Drumskull are the ones hand carved and built by Gordy Ryan. He is a drum making master and makes them out of hard maple from his property in Canada. They are wonderfully made and cost around $650 or more, made to order to your specs. Gordy will be at the festival teaching Olatunji Funk -- funked out versions of some Baba favorites. A great class. Talk to him directly if you are interested in commissioning a drum from him. They are exquisite.

World Rhythm Festival tribe get together?

I think it would be great for us to get together along with out-of-towners during the festival.

It looks to me like there's a hole in the schedule from 5:30 to 8:00 on Saturday evening.

I would like to propose that we get together during that time somewhere for dinner.

Weather permitting, I would enjoy getting together perhaps at a beach or park somewhere and maybe doing a cookout and/or drum & dance jam.

For parks I would suggest Gasworks, Golden Gardens, Discovery Park or Alki, in roughly that order.

I can bring two or three propane stoves for preparing food, as well as a cooler and if the parking spirits like us, then perhaps use my camper as a cooking space. I can also provide a limitted amount of cookery.

Opinions?

a little help please -Pismo

The interest in the Pismo gathering has grown considerably.
There are people coming from all over and that ’s a really kool thing.
I ’m thinking of what we can do to make the weekend as fun, convenient & safe as possible.
There ’s no tickets or revenue income so it ’s up to us to create the best environment we can for ourselves.

PLEASE ADDRESS ALL REPLIES TO THIS POST ON THE PISMO TRIBE SITE.
pismofiredrums.tribe.net/

If you haven ’t made reservations yet, it is a good idea to make them as soon as possible.
www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/co...page.jsp is the site for Oceano Dunes.

(see the “Guidelines & info post for this and other important info)
www.tribe.net/tribe/servl...emplate/pub%2Ctribes%2CViewThread.vm

Here is the direct link for Pismo / Oceano Dunes that has additional camping info, tide charts and other general info;
www.ohv.parks.ca.gov/default.asp

I ’ll be renting an 18 ’camping trailer from a local supplier to act as a base station.
www.luv2camp.com/ in case any of you want to go in together on one.

I ’m also purchasing & will set up silt fencing in segments around the center circle for fire performance, drumming, dancing, frolicking & whatever group experience we conjure up.
We ’ll set up our camp around the center circle in a ‘U ’shape that will extend away from the water so that we can expand the camp as more people arrive.

On that note, several people have mentioned they will have there own trailers there as well.
The wind is generally from the northwest (so the locals have told me) so we ’ll create the ‘bottom ’of the ‘U ’with our trailers to help establish our camp while providing a wind break as well.

The ‘base ’trailer is well equipped but does not have a generator.

So here ’s my wish list & feel free to add your requests and ideas to the list as well.
I ’m sure with the numbers that are coming, we can bring a really great vibe to this gathering.

1) Someone has offered to loan me a small generator but a back up genie would be helpful.

2) Sound system; Someone earlier offered to bring a system but in the barrage of emails I can ’t find it @ the moment.
We ’ll be drumming on our own sometimes but that won ’t carry us thru the entire weekend.
If there ’s a DJ in the crowd it will add to the vibe & we can still drum & spin to the mixes as well.

3) Burn barrels; a few would be nice to have around the perimeter of the circle.

4) Tiki torches and lamps to outline the circle.

5) Lots of wood; We ’ll be having a fire pit & hopefully a second if there ’s enough burnables.
Every bit helps & adds up. If everyone brings a little something it will be a huge help.

6) Trash bags; Most of us already know & live by a “LEAVE NO TRACE ”attitude.
The area is home to several ‘protected ’species of birds and other animals as well as being simply, a clean environment for ‘everyone ’to enjoy.
It can & probably will get windy at times so don ’t leave things lying around that can blow away.
It really doesn ’t matter where or who the trash / moop came from; clean as you go.
If we all bring and keep trash bags handy, we can leave this a beautiful beach for everyone & be welcome back to do this again.
Let ’s all do everything we can to leave the area as pristine & beautiful as possible.

7) Tables; a few tables to set up out side the base trailer & at the fuel dump.

8) Fire extinguishers; I have one & I ’m hoping to borrow more but we need to have them stationed & available in several well marked areas around the circle perimeter.

9) Large chest; I have a 4 ’x2 ’x2 ’portable tool chest to ‘help ’protect and ‘temporarily ’store fuel at the fuel dump but we MUST have a well marked, safe, designated NO BURN area FOR ALL FUELS. Any additional protective, ventable enclosures would be appreciated.

10) Buckets or small tubs to keep clean wet safety towels.

11) Glow sticks; I ’ll bring some but we can use more to help designate & mark areas like the fuel dump.

12) Anyone who wants to take still photos or has a video camcorder (preferably mini DV, but whatever) there ’ll be some kool moments. And if we can collect enough footage, I ’ll put together a video of the gathering.

13) The idea has been presented that perhaps a specific web page for the gathering would be helpful as there are some people not on Tribe or in case the Tribe site goes down.
I don ’t have a personal web site and never set one up, so any helpful hints on web design would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE ADDRESS ALL REPLIES TO THE PISMO SITE.
pismofiredrums.tribe.net/

SAFETY IS PRIORITY ! While this is a casual fun, campout, hangout gathering, we must all be aware AT ALL TIMES that the person next to you may not have the same experience and safety knowledge as you.
We will have safety guidelines in effect for the gathering & will make safety announcements at the beginning and during the weekend.

If you have not read the post about “Guidelines & info ”it is IMPORTANT READING that will help everyone to have a safe, trouble free and great experience.
www.tribe.net/tribe/servl...emplate/pub%2Ctribes%2CViewThread.vm

Remember that this is a group experience and as such we have the consideration of not only ourselves, but the other beach / dunes goers, wildlife, and the possibility of returning and continuing to enjoy future gatherings here and elsewhere.

This is only the beginning !
peace and burning bright, luvin, huggin, smillin, vibes to all !

As the weather clears, I think we should think about getting together for a good afternoon of drumming.

Perhaps sometime during an early weekend in April? Any thoughts on a place?

Personally I lean towards a park somewhere in Seattle; maybe discovery park or gasworks.

thoughts?

Ta Ke Ti Na workshop

hey folks, I just noticed that Scott Saunders posted a Seattle Ta ke Ti Na workshop on the seattle-drum-jams list. I'll copy the post below.

I took 4 of these workshops a couple of years ago from another local instructor and found them quite interesting. I highly recommend checking this out. Its not at all like any other drum or rhythm class, and its not even a music class, its more a way of training your awareness and learning to let the mind and body work together wthout the obstruction of concious thought.

fun and engaging, and totally different!

Bob

-- Fwd from seattle-drum-jams ------------------------

Rhythmic Voice Workshop

Date: March 6th, Saturday, 1:30-4:00 PM (please arrive early to settle in)

Cost: $25 (scholarships), space limited, register asap.

Location: Capitol Hill, Seattle, specifics sent upon registration.

Weather you love to sing, dance, and/or play an instrument the primal connection is thru rhythm. Ta Ke Ti Na uses the voice, stepping, clapping, silence, stillness and more. With the body as the main instrument, participants develop essential and fundamental musical skills in a joyful and relaxed way, learning on the edge between chaos and order. Learning with Ta Ke Ti Na means learning for life too. Parts that hinder us to live a fulfilled life surface as rhythmic disability and can be transformed in the rhythmic evolution that unfolds. Emotion and rational thought, intuitive feeling and cognitive action, passivity and action, outer movements and inner silence begin to integrate. Ta Ke Ti Na is appropriate for both beginners and professionals.

Fire arts and drumming performance troops who would like to perform @ the Pismo gathering, please let us know by posting to the tribe site as soon as possible.
http://pismofiredrums.tribe.net/

The weekend is getting closer & we'd like to get an idea of how many of you are coming.
It will add tremendously to everyones experience to have as many troops as possible perform in the 'center circle'.

We're getting more & more interest every day about this & it's just gonna get better with you there as well.

What could be better than to spend a weekend hanging with fire spinners & drummers from all over.

Drum Circle Work and Jam Party Sat 21st.

Ok folks, we have a place to have a drum circle -- it just needs a little help from some friends to help clear brush and tree limbs. We were badly hit by the ice storms last month.

I would like to call a drum jam/work party for Saturday the 21st in Woodinville. This would be a daytime event, starting around noon. We would work for a couple hours clearing and chipping brush and moving limbs down to the firewood cutting area, and then the circle would be ready for a fire and some jamming.

I will post this as an event later today or tomorrow with the details once we work them out. Please chime in if the date and time work well for you. We'll hope for clear weather but if it is too yucky then we'll jam indoors by the fireplace.

this tribe needs pictures for the photo gallery. Perhaps someone could upload some from past events?

I know it sounds cliche, but I think we should have as a main photo something taken of a drum circle at gasworks park, with lake union & the skyline in the background.

Also, perhaps we'll get some photos this weekend as we clear the brush at Liz's place.

Well, I may finally have a chance to stop by and check out Bone's now sort of famous 'Tipi Jam' tonight.

Its over in Bothell area, you need to rsvp and get directions directly, see info below.

Somebody posted a nice report of the jam and the tipi a few weeks ago on seattle-drum-jams, sounded quite nice!

If Bones gets back to me with directions, I plan to be there tonight. Hope to see some of you all there :)

Pismo / Oceano Dunes gathering info

Pismo / Oceano Dunes info

April 16, 17, 18, (the weekend after Easter) we'll be gathering @ Oceano Dunes (Pismo Beach).

pismofiredrums.tribe.net

I recently flew up and scouted the area from the air, and it's a really great place for us to have the gathering.

I've also heard positive things from several other people who have been there for other gatherings.

I spoke at length with the rangers about the regulations there and fires and fire spinning are allowed.

There are restrooms at several locations along the beach and even a couple of places back in the "dunes"

Access is easy and at low tide ( I'll post the tide times later) you can , and I have personally done this myself , drive any normal car on the beach as long as you stay off the dry sand.

We have the obvious choice to camp on the beach or we can trek a bit back into the dunes. It would be kool to make our camp further back in the dunes and be a bit more private, but you'll need 4 wheel drive in the soft sand.

There is a guy that takes people on tours of the dunes that we could throw a few $$ to and he'll get us wherever we want to camp. (anybody 4wd equipped?)

Also there is an outfit that has 18ft fully equipped camping trailers that sleep 6 people.

They are $95 per nite and if you don't have towing capabilities, they'll drop it off and pick it up where ever you want on the beach for $50.
They have a furnished kitchen, shower, toilet, heater, and awning.

Can't imagine doing this and certainly not suggesting it, but, there are also some reasonable motels very near by if you're really not into camping. (definitely not a suggestion, just covering as many options as possible)

You can obviously set up camp wherever you like, but it works really well to set up in a big circle. Parking the vehicles on the outside provides a wind break with the center area for an open fire pit and spinning and drumming.

It's is a $10 per vehicle (not per person) charge to camp in the dunes. There's no other charge than that, but there is a big fine if you don't have an over nite pass.

I know many of you have already joined firedrums which was originally created to be the Pismo gathering info site.
But that site quickly evolved into a more general events and happenings site and is serving that purpose well.

So now we've started this site specifically for the Pismo gathering.
I know there are many more people interested in this gathering so PLEASE let everyone you can know about this tribe and take a minute to join.

And if you have any info, suggestions or ideas, please post them to this site.

fer cryin' out loud, somebody solo! what's going on with all you drummers? have you all signed up to the seattle drum jam listserver? there are a load of jams beginning to happen hither and yon. i'm hoping to get out to the tipi-jam on sunday, but work may interfere. and there are a whole bunch of new classes happening too! michael beach is coming up from oregon to teach doumbek this weekend at simone ladrumma's studio (you can still sign up), and simone has posted a new schedule as well.

i got a note from Yerba Buena, seattle's super cuban charanga band, that they will be at 'the triple door' with arturo rodriguez on feb. 7th. if you love cuban music, its a show worth catching..and dancing too!

so?.. what have you got to say for yourselves?

Ok, this has little to do with actually drumming -- I am planning on going down to the Baltic Room tonight for this event. Check out www.thebalticroom.com for details.
However, as Michael has pointed out to me, we are due for a lot of snow tonight. That may change my plans, since I live in Woodinville/Maltby and we'll be getting about 5-8 inches.

Welcome, new folks!
Everyone please introduce yourselves, maybe say something about how you found us and what you are looking for . . .

I'm Liz, I drum, dance, and sing. I am currently focused on djembe but am learning a little doumbec also. I do both west african and middle eastern dancing. Looking to get a monthly jam happening outdoors with fire, possibly up at FireGrove, our place in Woodinville.

I have added information about Simone LaDrumma's and Bill Matthew's ongoing classes in the tribe description; please check it out and send me information to add to it!

I'd like to keep ongoing or long term information in that space, or at least until Tribe sets up some sort of FAQ system.

For monthly classes, perhaps we should post them as listings?

I'd like to keep a thread going each month where we post current classes related to drum, dance, and song. Please copy over class info from any drum lists you are on, so we can keep one another informed.
